About
Dr Mary Custureri has experience working with students from every academic level. Recognized for her creation of an award-winning Strategies program, she is listed in Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in American Education. She is currently a full time university lecturer. She has also been the recipient of numerous grants and awards for her teaching excellence. Some of Dr. Mary’s Published Works: A manual for teachers and administrators, Instructional Strategies: Helping All Students Succeed (NCEA, 2004); Help Yourself Learn in Ten Easy Steps (Second edition 2008, Highpoint Publishing); The Happy Anderson series of children’s books (2005); Studentaces.com essay programs (currently out of print), and a published doctoral dissertation (Florida Atlantic University 1989) REad a Book in an Hour: A Wholistic Reading…. She also has written newspaper columns and various pamphlets distributed to students and parents.
Dr Mary Custureri, a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the International Reading Association, The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the International Society for Technology in Education, the Florida College English Association, the Florida Development Education Association, and the National Catholic Education Association, has served on educational advisory boards, including a reading board for a national children’s magazine. She has been awarded numerous grants and recognition for her successful innovations. Her previous book, Strategies, Helping all Students Succeed, a manual for teachers, published by the NCEA in Washington, is based on her experiences as a department head of the successful high school course COMMUNICATIONS, which she created and which is still ongoing under the name STRATEGIES.
Dr. Mary is a speaker who has presented at state, national and international English and reading association conferences: NCTE, FDEA, IRA, TESOL and FRA, as well as at other leading academic and cultural conferences. She has served on school advisory boards in public and private schools and is a recognized authority in teaching children, motivating students and teaching teachers.
The Happy Anderson books were created because of an expressed need of primary school teachers looking for ways to implement some of the strategies Dr. Custureri was using and for ways to accelerate learning through innovative ways. They have been successfully implemented in first through third year classes and by individual students who feel a need to accelerate and gain confidence. Each of the stories in the series is about an adventure of Happy Anderson, a beloved mutt, who teaches that kindness and friendship enable others to become winners.
